Active Shooter and Violent Intruder Response

The following information is intended to reduce your personal risk in the unlikely event that an Active Shooter Incident or other violent intruder incident should occur on campus. A “violent intruder” is a person who is causing or threatening to cause death and/or serious bodily injury with a weapon, including but not limited to firearms, explosive devices, blunt objects, knives, axes and even swords.

DPS has compiled information about how to respond to an active shooter or violent intruder incident – if you’re in the building when an event occurs, how law enforcement will act when responding to the location, and what information to convey to law enforcement if you are calling to report a situation involving an active shooter or violent intruder.

University Community members can also view the video “Shots Fired on Campus,” produced by The Center for Personal Protection and Safety, which provides critical guidance on how to recognize and survive an active shooter situation, on the Syracuse University MySlice website. You will need a Syracuse University NetID and password to log in to the site.

Additionally, the US Department of Homeland Security recently produced the video below, offering guidance on preparation for active shooter incidents.
