Due to a recent pattern of burglaries off-campus, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) is writing to remind the Syracuse University community of action you can take to protect yourselves and your belongings:
Don’t let anyone follow in behind you. When entering your building, make sure the door closes and latches fully behind you. Do not hold the door open for individuals you don’t know.
Lock your doors every time, even when you are home. A locked door is an essential element of personal safety.
Report maintenance issues immediately. If your door doesn’t lock properly, notify your landlord or property manager right away. Students and staff living or working on campus should submit a maintenance request.
Keep valuables out of sight. Do not leave laptops, bags, keys, or other valuables in common areas or visible through windows, including in your vehicle.
Know your neighbors. A community that looks out for one another is harder to target.
Trust your instincts. If something or someone feels off, remove yourself from the situation and report it immediately.
