Public Safety Informational Notice: Off-Campus Burglaries

For the protection and safety of Syracuse University students, faculty, staff and neighbors, the Department of Public Safety releases the following informational notice:

Off-Campus Burglaries

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Syracuse Police Department (SPD) are actively investigating several off-campus burglaries that have occurred in recent days in Syracuse neighborhoods located to the north and east of campus. The alleged suspects have been entering through unlocked windows and doors.

To enhance your safety and protect your personal space and belongings, we recommend taking the following steps:

  • Lock all exterior doors and windows – even when you are home.
  • Report all suspicious people, activity and behavior immediately.
  • Store valuable items in secure places and lock interior doors when you are out.
  • Record serial numbers of electronic equipment.

Suspicious Emails

Due to the vast number of individuals who have contacted the Department of Public Safety regarding the suspicious emails sent to members of the campus community, we ask that you only contact DPS if you have fallen victim to this scam. To contact DPS, dial 315.443.2224 or if you would like to submit an anonymous report, you can use the Silent Witness tool.

Please note, due to the number of email and phone calls DPS has received, we may not be able to get back to you unless you have been directly impacted by this scam.

Suspicious Emails

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) has received information that several members of the campus community have received suspicious emails offering employment as a personal assistant.

DPS is asking that if you have received this message or if you have been in contact with the individual to please call DPS as soon as possible at 315.443.2224. If you would like to anonymously report NON-EMERGENCY information for DPS, you can use the Silent Witness tool.

The Department of Public Safety in collaboration with the Syracuse Police Department have made an arrest in the Informational Notice (Suspicious Person) issued on April 6, 2017.

Public Safety Informational Notice: Suspicious Event

For the protection and safety of SU students, faculty, staff and neighbors, the Department of Public Safety releases the following informational notice: Suspicious Event

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) has received information that several women on campus have been approached by a male subject and asked a number of unusual questions. The individual has stated that he is conducting a survey and that his survey requires he ask the questions in a number of different settings. The male is described as being approximately 5’8” tall, thin build, with dark hair and dark eyes.

DPS is asking that if you are approached by anyone consistent with the description and mode of operation listed above, do not engage this individual and call DPS as soon as possible. Should you have any information or knowledge regarding any similar incidents, contact the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety at 315.443.2224.
