September 2021 Updates From DPS

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

I hope this email finds you all well and that you are enjoying the fall semester on campus. I have several brief items that I would like to share with you this month:

  • National Coffee with a Cop Day
  • South Campus Community Center
  • Lock Your Doors and Windows
  • Monthly Bias Update

National Coffee with a Cop Day

Next Wednesday, Oct. 6, is National Coffee with a Cop Day. Look for our officers out in front of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) offices in Sims Hall from 9 a.m. to noon giving out free coffee coupons and sweet treats. We invite you to stop by and share any feedback you have with us!

South Campus Community Center

On Friday, Oct. 29, we will have the grand opening of our South Campus Community Center, located at 121 Small Road, Apt. 8. The idea for the space stems from the Loretta Lynch recommendations as a place where students can drop in and share their questions and concerns with members of DPS. Keep an eye on our Instagram account @SyracuseDPS for more information and opening day details!

Lock Your Doors and Windows

As you may have noticed from our recent public safety notices, there has been an increase in burglary activity on South Campus and in the east neighborhood. I cannot stress to you all enough the importance of locking your doors and windows, even when you are in your residence, as all of these incidents have happened because of an unlocked door or window. Additionally, please do not leave the keys or fob for your car in your vehicle. These criminals are looking for easy opportunities to take advantage of our community. Please do your part to take away those opportunities and be vigilant with securing your residences and property.

Monthly Bias Update

Aug. 25: Crude graffiti on a whiteboard in Shaw Hall

Update: Our team completed multiple canvasses of the area and performed an extensive review of the available camera footage, but no additional leads were found.

To report a bias incident, please contact DPS directly at 315.443.2224. If you would like to anonymously report NON-EMERGENCY information to DPS, you can use the Silent Witness tool or submit anonymous tips via the Rave Guardian app. Any bias-motivated incident reported to DPS will be posted on our public site, so that our campus community can remain informed. You can also report a bias incident and receive support through the STOP Bias website.

Sign up to subscribe to the bias incident reports.

I hope you find this information useful and valuable.

  • Sincerely,
    Chief Bobby Maldonado

Public Safety Information: Arrest Made in Burglary Incident

A 17-year-old individual with no affiliation to Syracuse University is facing several charges after being arrested following a burglary incident that was reported just after 3 a.m. this morning. The same individual is believed to be responsible for several other burglaries in the area.

The Department of Public Safety responded to the 100 block of Lambreth Lane to investigate a burglary complaint. When officers arrived, they observed a person leaving the area in a vehicle. After determining the vehicle was stolen from the 100 block of Small Road, the officers stopped the vehicle on E. Colvin Street. It was then discovered that the suspect had stolen the keys to the vehicle when burglarizing a South Campus apartment.

The suspect was arrested by the Syracuse Police Department and later charged with second degree burglary, fourth degree grand larceny, fourth degree criminal possession of stolen property, fifth degree criminal possession of stolen property, third degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and second degree criminal impersonation.

Public Safety Update

On Sunday, September 19, 2021, at approximately 12:57 a.m., Syracuse University students living at University Village Apartments on South Campus observed a group, described as eight young male teenagers with no affiliation to the University, trying to break into apartments. The students confronted the group and apprehended one of the suspects, while the rest of the group took off. The students called Syracuse Police, who in turn alerted the Department of Public Safety.

While waiting for police to arrive, the students reported that the group returned to the property and threw rocks at the building and windows. The students attempted to apprehend the other suspects, but they fled the scene heading north away from campus through the backyards in the 1500 block of Westmoreland Avenue. One of the suspects reportedly fired a shot into the air while standing near the sidewalk in the 2000 block of East Colvin Street which is just north of the University Village Apartments.

When law enforcement arrived on the scene, the detained teenager was taken into police custody. A magazine for a handgun was located during a ground search of the area adjacent to South Campus. No injuries were reported, and no further description of the suspects is available.
If you were in the vicinity at the time and witnessed the incident, please contact the Syracuse Police Department at 315.442.5222 or the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety at 315.443.2224. If you would like to anonymously report NON-EMERGENCY information for DPS, you can use the Silent Witness tool or the Rave Guardian mobile app.
