This is an update to the Crime Prevention Information Alert regarding off campus area burglaries, issued by the Department of Public Safety dated September 8, 2015.

It has come to the attention of the Department of Public Safety that some off campus apartments in areas near campus have recently been burglarized while occupied. The intruder(s) entered via unlocked doors and stole various electronics items.

These types of crimes are preventable, and this is a reminder to lock your doors at all times. If anyone experiences or witnesses an incident like this, please contact the Syracuse Police Department at (315) 442-5222 or the Syracuse University Department of Public Safety at (315) 443-2224.

BICYCLE SECURITY

September 4, 2015

DPS reports that several bicycle thefts have occurred on campus in recent weeks. Although the stolen bicycles were secured to bike racks with cable locks, the locks were easily cut.

To help reduce bicycle thefts, owners are advised to properly utilize a Ubolt type lock (as seen below) to secure their bicycle frames directly to a bike rack. These U-bolt locks are available at the Syracuse University Bookstore in the Schine Student Center at a 25 percent discount (with coupon) for students, faculty and staff.

Public Safety Notice: Off Campus Forcible Touching, 8/30/2015

Sunday, August 30, 2015 at approximately 2:00 am

SPD Case # 15-435800

800 block of Walnut Ave

A student reported being forcibly touched by an unknown male in the 800 block of Walnut Ave., between Marshall St. and E. Adams St. The student reports she was walking alone behind her off campus residence on Walnut Ave., when she was approached by the suspect.

Emergency Drill Exercise Tuesday, August 4

The Syracuse University Department of Public Safety, in conjunction with the Syracuse Police Department, Onondaga County Emergency Management, Syracuse Fire Department, Syracuse University Ambulance, Rural Metro, and Fire and Life Safety Services, will conduct a training exercise in the vicinity of the College Place bus stop on Tuesday, August 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

During the drill, uniformed officers wearing tactical gear may be visible near the bus stop and on College Place and loud noises are also possible.

The drill also serves as a training exercise for student-journalists from Newhouse, who will serve in the role of media covering the event.

The drill will require the temporary closure of College Place between University Place and the entrance to the Q-4 Lot. The Q-4 parking lot will remain accessible to and from Forestry Drive/Sims Drive and College Place.

The following shuttle routes will be affected by this closure:

Connective Corridor:  On Tuesday, August 4th Between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. the Connective Corridor will not be able to operate via College Place or Sims Drive and will use the following detour – Comstock Avenue main shuttle stop to left on Euclid Avenue, left on Ostrom Avenue, left on Waverly Avenue, left on Irving Avenue, right on East Raynor Avenue and regular route to the Warehouse

Quad Shuttle: The Quad shuttle will not operate to the College Place shuttle stop on Tuesday, August 4th between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

These are the only two routes that will change during this drill.
